Sagaing

Sagaing
Sagaing is one of Myanmar's most important religious centers, located on the banks of the Irrawaddy River. The hillsides are covered with white and gold pagodas and monasteries, creating a stunning landscape that's instantly recognizable. There are reportedly over 600 religious structures scattered across the hills, making it a major destination for Buddhist pilgrims and travelers interested in spiritual sites.
The area is connected to Mandalay by the Inwa Bridge, and many visitors come on day trips from the larger city. The most famous spot is probably U Min Thonze Cave, with its crescent-shaped colonnade housing dozens of Buddha images. Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and river below.
Beyond just temples, Sagaing has a rich history as a former royal capital. After the fall of Bagan in the 14th century, it briefly served as the center of a Shan kingdom before power shifted elsewhere. Today, thousands of monks and nuns live in the area, giving it a peaceful, meditative atmosphere despite the growing number of visitors. The silence is often broken only by the gentle ringing of temple bells, creating a serene environment that feels removed from the bustle of modern Myanmar.
