Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock)

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, better known as the Golden Rock, is one of Myanmar's most incredible sights. This massive boulder covered in gold leaf seems to defy gravity as it balances on the edge of a cliff. It's said that the rock stays in place because of a single strand of Buddha's hair that's kept inside the small stupa built on top.

The journey to the Golden Rock is an adventure itself. Visitors typically take a bumpy truck ride up the mountain, followed by a hike to reach the sacred site. During peak pilgrimage season, the atmosphere becomes electric as devotees gather to pray, meditate, and add more gold leaf to the already dazzling rock.

For Buddhists, this is one of Myanmar's most important religious sites. Legend has it that the rock has been balancing in this precarious position for 2,500 years. Many locals make the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime, believing a visit will bring good fortune.
