Hualien

Hualien
Hualien, situated on Taiwan's east coast, is often regarded as one of the most beautiful areas in the country. What makes this place so special is the incredible Taroko Gorge, with its marble cliffs and turquoise waters. The gorge is truly a sight to behold, offering spectacular hiking trails and views that will leave you speechless.
The city itself has a relaxed vibe compared to busy Taipei. With a mix of indigenous cultures, particularly the Amis and Taroko tribes, Hualien offers visitors a glimpse into Taiwan's diverse cultural heritage. The night markets here are less crowded than elsewhere in Taiwan but still serve up amazing local dishes worth trying.
Hualien's coastline is another highlight, with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean against a backdrop of mountains. The area is prone to earthquakes due to its location on a tectonic boundary, which has shaped much of the dramatic landscape you'll see. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the natural scenery is unmatched.
For food lovers, Hualien is famous for its mochi (sticky rice cakes) and aboriginal cuisine that uses fresh local ingredients. The agricultural plains around the city produce some of Taiwan's best rice and vegetables, making it a great place to experience authentic Taiwanese food culture in a more laid-back setting than the country's western cities.
